Stone Fly Strange Face CatOwl Creature Jester Coffee Drinker

More of my creatures... I've carved everything from a fly to a coffee drinker...

Candle Holder Feline rockclimber These two pieces are small, about 6 inches (15 CM) wide. The one on your left is a candle holder- a large candle sits in the opening on the top. It reflects my feelings about limestone, a material which I find to be fluid, flexible, and even sensual. This and others of my creatures are available for purchase.

Gargoil!

Carving a bear Hollywood Rooster

These two shots were taken in the early 1980's when I was working on the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. On the left you see me carving a polar bear munching on a large fish. It was installed about 120 feet (36 M.) above the ground. That is why so many of these gargoyles and grotesques need to be so expressive and exaggerated- the character has to read from a great distance. Strong highlights, deep shadows, and caricature are necessary or they will just fade from view. The Rooster is holding a film can, and the film wraps around its neck forming a bow tie. This was done in honor of a donor who was in the film industry.

Unfinished grotesque
This sculpture was unfinished when the photo was taken. View the .jpg file and you can see the chisel work, and how the piece is emerging from the stone.
